Dear Reader (Kait's Version)

Hello! My name is Kaitlyn Chatterton but feel free to call me Kait! I'm the self-taught baker, content creator, blogger, and photographer behind Kait Bakes Cakes. Behind the scenes, I'm a stay-at-home mom to two young daughters (1 and 3) and am diving back into my passions in life as they grow. During my postpartum journey, decorating and creating cakes ended up becoming a healing outlet for me to regain my sense of self during motherhood. It's so important to me to celebrate all of life's milestones - big or small - and what better way to do that than with cake? I want to help others find the confidence to make their own pretty and delicious cake creations at home. Follow along as I showcase my cake designs, curate doctored cake recipes, and share small party ideas.

Understanding my journey to cake is understanding that creative outlets have played a significant part of my life. I've often found peace in tough times through writing, drawing, and creating. While baking and decorating cakes was something I had always wanted to pursue, I hadn't yet found an opportunity to step into it. Luckily, cakes came into my life at the right time at the end of 2021.

After becoming a mother, I struggled with the looming cloud of postpartum anxiety. Having received help in other ways - I still struggled with wanting to feel more like myself again. When my daughter's first birthday came about in 2021, I thankfully used the opportunity to step outside my comfort zone to attempt both her birthday cake and smash cake. My hope was to give myself a 'me time' activity but - at the very least - start a fun tradition of making birthday cakes for the girls.

Making those first two cakes brought out a joy within myself that I hadn't experienced in some time. From there, I didn't stop incorporating cake making into my life as it soothed anxieties of mine in my free time. The creativity of decorating was my favorite, so I often focused on doctored cake recipes with delicious scratch buttercream to give myself a quicker, consistent result for my cakes so I could burst into creativity as soon as possible. This method can also be less intimidating to newcomers and allow yourself to quickly develop confidence while baking. Plus, nobody is going to know these amazing cakes start with a box mix as a base unless you tell them (trust me!).

If you are reading this far and supporting my blog, you are a part of my personal healing journey and I appreciate you allowing me to share my baking and decorating with you. Happy caking!

Lots of love, Kait
